CSOs role in promoting green projects in urban areas

Green investments in the urban areas

The Romanian Center for European Policies (CRPE) organized an engaging workshop on June, 03, 2024 for over 30 participants from five EU countries in Slatina, Romania, with a focus on the key role role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in promoting green projects within urban areas. The workshop had has a kick start a comprehensive report prepared by CRPE which detailed the significance of green investments in the future of Romanian cities. Participants were introduced to the concept of green investments, EU-level expectations on the 2030 and 2050 climate targets, and ongoing initiatives in Romanian cities. This set the stage for a deeper exploration of sustainable urban development practices.

Best practice examples on EU investments from the EU countries

To foster collaborative thinking and practical application, participants were divided into six groups, each focusing on a different type of green project: Air quality, Water quality, Biodiversity, Noise pollution, Energy efficiency, and Waste and circular economy. These groups were tasked with developing proposals for initiatives tailored to their own cities, such as Constanta, Athens, Sofia, Bucharest, Madrid, and Prague. Each group identified the current environmental issues within their chosen city, supported by well-researched arguments, and proposed innovative solutions to address these challenges.

The participants engaged in lively discussions, sharing insights and feedback on each other’s proposals. This peer-review process allowed for a diverse exchange of ideas, helping refine each proposal. Each group worked to ensure their proposals were not only feasible but also impactful in improving urban sustainability.

What role for CSOs and civic groups to promote green initiatives

CSOs are important players in promoting green investments in our urban areas. They engage in participatory budgeting to ensure community voices shape sustainable spending, send letters to city halls advocating for specific green initiatives, and organize protests to raise public awareness and pressure policymakers. Additionally, CSOs conduct advocacy campaigns, collaborate with local governments and businesses, and provide educational programs to foster a culture of environmental responsibility. Through these efforts, CSOs can ensure that green investments are prioritized and effectively implemented in urban areas.
